About the founder

Anjum kasmani

Deemed a trailblazer in the field of Islamic drumming and devotional art, Anjum successfully created the first Islamic Daff and Nasheed curriculum in the UK and Australia.

Anjum is a traditional drummer, daff teacher, and founder of Desert Echo Daff School. After studying the daff in Jordan in 2007, Anjum returned to England and founded The Daff School. Anjum was not satisfied with only performing but also wanted her audience to taste the transformative power of drums firsthand.

With the simple aim of reviving the tradition of the daff in Muslim homes in the West and facilitating a safe space for women and children to express themselves via rhythm and devotional music, Desert Echo’s drumming curriculums have benefited tens of thousands of students around the world, created opportunities for confidence in expression for CALD women, and inspired a new generation of drum teachers and performers.

Anjum has studied Daff over many years with many notable drummers including Jordanian Munshid, Shaykh Nidal, Iranian Daf Master Mohamed Jaberi, World Percussionist Vasilis Sarikis, Australian Drum Maker Jayatii Berry and Drum master Glen Valez to name a few. She is dedicated to preserving the lineage of traditional drummers.

As a professional drummer Anjum has performed with many artists from around the world and regularly travels internationally with her drums to perform. Anjum founded Desert Echo Munshidaat and Mini Munshidaat, two female nasheed groups in the UK, as well as Desert Echo Munshidaat Sydney. She is presently the drummer for the Noor Al Imaan band in Sydney. Anjum is also the founder of the Qasida Collective, an online portal of traditional islamic poetry as well as a number of Qasida Collective circles from London to Sydney

Anjum’s dedication to creative curriculum development and she is often consulted by other contemporary teachers. To this effect, Anjum has contributed to Pearls of Islam Drumming School Daff Curriculum and taught a course on the history of the Daff at the Rhythms of Remembrance Series, run by The Rabbani Project.
